How to choose the right skincare based on your skin concern
Choosing the right skincare for your skin concerns is important to ensure your routine is more effective and more efficient. We spoke to beauty expert, Amy Zapantis, founder of Amatus for her top tips on how to select the right skincare based on your skin concerns.
“I recommend first identifying your skin type, whether it's oily, dry, combination, or sensitive, this helps to choose the right product type or range (oil free, calming, no harsh ingredients etc).”
Researching ingredients before using them on your skin is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, skin types and sensitivities vary widely; what works for one person may cause irritation or adverse reactions in another. Understanding ingredient properties helps identify potential allergens, irritants, or harmful substances, enabling you to make informed choices that promote skin health.
It is important to recognise the specific issues like acne, ageing, pigmentation, or dry skin. For acne-prone skin, look for products that would contain salicylic acid, azelaic acid or niacinamide. If dryness is a concern, opt for hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin or shea butter and choose richer creams. For pigmentation or uneven tone, products with vitamin C, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or arbutin can be beneficial.
Amy explains, “sensitive skin should choose products that focus on a gentler approach with soothing agents like jojoba, ceramides, green tea or turmeric root. Choosing skincare products can be overwhelming, so identifying these and tailoring your decisions to your skin type and concerns will help achieve the best results, maintain healthy as well as prevent any irritations with a more targeted and refined approach.”
It's worth taking the time to understand your skin and what you are using and why; it’s the key to building an effective skincare routine. By acknowledging your unique skin type, concerns, and goals, you can tailor your product selection to meet your specific needs. This tailored approach not only enhances the effectiveness of your regimen but also helps prevent potential damage or setbacks caused by unsuitable products.
Moreover, understanding the science behind ingredients can foster a deeper appreciation for the art of skincare, allowing you to navigate the vast array of options with confidence. Ultimately, informed choices lead to healthier skin and an easier skincare journey.
